January 31, 2010

Yahoo! Sports, citing unidentified sources close to Paul, reported that testresults revealed a partially torn meniscus.

Bryant finished with 19, and Andrew Bynum(notes) had 19 points and 11 rebounds.

The Celtics led 81-70 before the Lakers made the next four baskets. RasheedWallace(notes) hit a 3-pointer—his only basket of the game—to stop the run, and itwas still a three-point game with less than two minutes left when Bryant hit apair of free throws to make it 87-86.

It was 89-88 when Pierce was called for pushing off. Bryant, who complainedof a sore ankle after Friday night’s win in Philadelphia, gave the Lakers thelead, then Allen’s 3-point attempt at the final buzzer bounced harmlessly offthe rim.

Pau Gasol(notes) had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers, who won their fourthstraight game and beat Boston for the third consecutive time since losing Game 6of the 2008 NBA finals to watch the Celtics clinch their 17th championship.

Pierce scored 15, Kevin Garnett(notes) had 10 with nine rebounds and KendrickPerkins(notes) finished with eight points and 10 boards for the Celtics, who werecoming off losses to Orlando and Atlanta—two of the top four teams in theEastern Conference—that left them at 6-10 since beating the Magic on ChristmasDay.

Garnett missed 10 of those games with a hyperextended right knee, and Bostonwas 4-6 without him. But Garnett’s return hasn’t solved all the Celtics’problems.

The Celtics fell behind 22-10 in the first quarter, when Bynum scored 12points, and trailed 40-34 midway through the second before scoring the next 15points. Rondo had nine points and eight assists in the quarter and was in doubledigits in both by halftime.

AFC beats NFC 41-34 in Pro Bowl

January 31, 2010

MIAMI (AP)—In its new role as a warmup to the Super Bowl, the Pro Bowl becamea series of wind sprints.

Long gains were the rule and hard hitting was the exception as the AFC beatthe NFC 41-34 on Sunday night.

Light showers fell for much of the game, stirring memories of a rainy SuperBowl in Miami three years ago. But uniforms remained mostly spotless, with morepushing and shoving than tackling.

“It’s different. It was like 7 on 7,” NFC linebacker Brian Orakpo(notes) said.“Everybody came out here trying not to get hurt and give the fans a good show”

Matt Schaub(notes) of the Houston Texans threw for 189 yards and two AFC scores, and was chosen the most valuable player.

“It’s a game you watch growing up as a kid and wonder if you could ever bein,” Schaub said. “To actually be a part of it is incredible.”

Aaron Rodgers(notes) also threw two touchdown passes, and NFC teammate DeSeanJackson(notes) had two scoring catches.

From the standpoint of ticket sales, this year’s new venue and slot on theleague calendar was a success. The crowd of 70,697 was the largest for a ProBowl since 1959 in Los Angeles.

Spectators included Peyton Manning(notes), Drew Brees(notes) and other Pro Bowl playersfrom the Super Bowl teams. Manning and the Indianapolis Colts will face Breesand the New Orleans Saints on the same field next Sunday in the biggest game ofthe season.

The NFL sought to transform the Pro Bowl into a bigger game by playing itbefore the Super Bowl for the first time. In a one-year experiment, the leaguealso moved the game from Honolulu, its home since 1980.

The stadium was half empty by the third quarter, perhaps partly because ofthe rain and temperatures in the 60s. It was sunny and 82 in Honolulu at gametime.

Did the weather dampen the players’ enthusiasm for Miami?

“It’s beautiful. It’s paradise,” NFC receiver Steve Smith said. “Too badit’s not Hawaii.”

Eager to host more big events, the Dolphins have proposed adding a roof thatwould cover fans as part of stadium improvements that could cost $250 million ormore. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says the upgrades are needed if SouthFlorida is to remain competitive in bidding for future Super Bowls.

Nearly 40 percent of the players originally selected for the game didn’tplay. One of the AFC replacements, David Garrard(notes), threw for 183 yards, includinga 48-yard touchdown to Vincent Jackson(notes).

“It’s so awesome,” Garrard said. “One of my goals coming into the gamewas to just be relevant and show all the people who said, `What is he doing inthere? The Pro Bowl has dropped off a few pegs,’ that I do belong.”

Vincent Jackson made seven catches for 122 yards. Chad Ochocinco(notes) had a40-yard reception but didn’t do any kicking after practicing placements andpunts for the AFC during the week.

“That’s OK. It was fun anyway,” Ochocinco said.

DeSean Jackson scored on a 7-yard pass from Rodgers and a 58-yard pass fromDonovan McNabb(notes), his regular quarterback with the Eagles.

“I’m just out here having a great time,” Jackson said. “And at the sametime I’m trying to put out a little effort.”

There were plenty of other big plays. Joshua Cribbs(notes) caught a punt at thegoal line and returned it 65 yards. A penalty negated LaMarr Woodley’s(notes)64-interception return for a touchdown.

“I slowed up to get a little camera time,” Woodley said.

The AFC totaled 517 yards and the NFC 470. Both teams threw for more than400 yards.

Redskins linebacker London Fletcher(notes), a 12-year veteran playing in his firstPro Bowl, found the AFC’s offensive approach exhausting.

“They came out with a bunch of screens and had us running around,”Fletcher said.

But there were no complaints from Fletcher’s teammate on defense, first-timePro Bowler Justin Smith(notes) of the 49ers.

“The pace is nice,” Smith said. “You don’t have to worry about workingtoo hard.”

The game will return to Honolulu in 2011 and 2012, but the league hasn’tdecided whether to hold those games before or after the Super Bowl. The Pro Bowlsite for 2013 and beyond hasn’t been determined.

Amare, Nash help Suns snap road skid

January 31, 2010

Arkansas rallies past No. 18 Mississippi

January 31, 2010

OXFORD, Miss. (AP)—Mike Washington had 22 points and 11 rebounds and MarshawnPowell added 19 points and two key blocks as Arkansas snapped a 15-gameSoutheastern Conference road losing streak by upsetting No. 18 Mississippi 80-73Sunday night.

The Razorbacks (10-11, 3-3) earned back-to-back wins over SoutheasternConference Western Division leaders, erasing an eight-point deficit to beat theRebels (16-5, 4-3) just days after overcoming a 12-point deficit againstMississippi State.

Washington had 12 points and eight rebounds in the final 20 minutes andPowell had 12 points and blocked Murphy Holloway twice with the game on theline.

Holloway finished with 19 points and 17 rebounds and Chris Warren had 17 forthe Rebels. Rotnei Clarke scored 18 for the Razorbacks, who snapped Ole Miss’three-game winning streak.

Surprisingly, the Razorbacks were able to snap out of their SEC road woeswithout much help from Courtney Fortson, who led Arkansas to a 67-62 win overMississippi State on Thursday with a career-high 35 points.

This time, though, Fortson spent much of the second half on the bench afterdrawing his fourth foul with nearly 13 minutes left in the game.

Powell and Washington stepped in for Fortson and dominated the shorthandedRebels frontcourt.

They quickly got Ole Miss forwards DeAundre Cranston and Terrance Henry infoul trouble. With center Reginald Buckner also out with an ankle injury, thatleft just Holloway and guards to handle defending the paint. Washington andPowell pressed that advantage mercilessly, converting lob passes into layups asOle Miss’ smaller defenders fronted them.

Powell scored eight points during a 13-6 half-opening run to erase afive-point deficit and give Arkansas a 47-45 lead. Ole Miss pushed back out to afive-point lead, but this time Washington answered by scoring six points in a12-4 run that made it 63-60 Arkansas with 9:08 left.

Warren and Terrico White hit consecutive 3s to give the Rebels one lastlead, but then Washington and Powell scored 10 of the Razorbacks’ next 13 pointsas Arkansas took a 76-71 lead with 1:06 left. Clarke hit four straight freethrows to ice the win.

It was the first loss for Ole Miss in 12 games when it outrebounded itsopponent. The Rebels had a 45-32 rebounding advantage, including 23-5 onoffense. But the Razorbacks outscored Ole Miss 36-34 in the paint and Clarketook advantage, hitting 4 of 6 3-pointers.

Holloway gave Ole Miss an early advantage with boundless hustle under thebasket, especially on the offensive end. Holloway had a double-double in thefirst 13 minutes and finished the first half with 11 points and 13 rebounds, including five on offense.

He scored seven points during a 15-7 run that made it 22-14. He started withan alley oop dunk from Warren, added an old-fashioned three-point play and histhird basket came after he ripped the rebound away from a defender.

But he wasn’t much of a factor in the second half as Washington and Powellshowed their muscle in the paint.

Nuggets coach George Karl said he expected Anthony to try to play Mondayagainst Sacramento, when Denver returns home following a three-game road trip. The Nuggets have gone 3-1 without Anthony.

Before the game, Karl said the expected fast pace of the game held Anthonyout much as anything. He said Anthony still wasn’t comfortable making sharpmoves.

Karl was right: The Spurs did push the ball, but the Nuggets ran away by theend. Antonio McDyess(notes) hit a 19-foot jumper with 3:24 left to get the Spurs within87-85, but the Nuggets scored on their last seven possessions.

Tim Duncan(notes) had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Spurs. Manu Ginobili(notes) added14 points.
