“I hope Favre’s OK,” Brady said.

Favre left in the fourth quarter after being slammed to the turf; the teamsaid he had a cut in his chin that needed 10 stitches. Backup Tarvaris Jackson(notes)threw for a touchdown on his first play and a 2-point conversion on his second,but he didn’t get the ball back until the two-minute warning had sounded and theVikings trailed by 10.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis(notes) had two touchdowns—the first multi-touchdown game ofhis career—scoring his first on a 13-yard run to make it 21-10. Favre thendrove Minnesota (2-5) to the New England 3 yard-line before he was flattened bydefensive lineman Myron Pryor(notes).

Jackson relieved him and threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Naufahu Tahi(notes) onthe first play, then hit Percy Harvin(notes) for the 2-point conversion that made it21-18. But Brady engineered a 13-play, 80-yard drive, with Green-Ellis gettingcartwheeled into the end zone to make it 28-18 with just 1:56 left.

Brady completed 16 of 27 passes for 240 yards and Green-Ellis ran 17 timesfor 112 yards to give the Patriots (6-1) their fifth straight victory.

Favre was 22 for 32 for 259 yards, throwing an interception on a tipped balland taking two intentional grounding penalties when he tried to avoid sacks.Adrian Peterson carried 25 times for 92 yards, and Harvin caught six passes for104 yards for the Vikings despite missing about a quarter with an ankle injury.

Former Patriot Randy Moss(notes) had just one catch for 8 yards in his first tripback to Foxborough since he talked himself out of town on Oct. 6.

A week after a hit left him with two fractures in his left foot, Favremanaged to make his record-extending 292nd consecutive start.

But he couldn’t finish the game.

Pryor slammed him to the turf, and Favre was slow to get up. He waseventually taken from the field by trainers who held a towel to his face, thendriven to the locker room on a cart. The team said he had a laceration on hisface.

Favre had taken another hard hit at the end of the first quarter, when herolled to his right and threw for Greg Lewis(notes) in the end zone. The pass wasincomplete, but Favre was hit in the head from Patriots linebacker Gary Guyton(notes),a penalty that gave the Vikings a first-and-goal from the 6.

Peterson ran it to the 5, and then gained a bruising yard on the first playof the second quarter to make it 7-7. The Vikings brought it to the Patriots’ 1yard-line in the final minutes of the half, but Brandon Spikes(notes) and JermaineCunningham(notes) stuffed Peterson for a 2-yard loss on fourth-and-1 to keep the gametied at the half.

But it was the usually immobile Brady who made plays with his feet,high-stepping away from one diving pass-rusher and then spinning away fromanother before seeing Tate streaking down the left sideline behind the defense.Brady lofted it to him, and Tate cut across the field to outrun two defenders tothe end zone for his first career touchdown reception.

“I just caught a glimpse of him as I spinned out of it and he was open,”said Brady, who has 237 career TD passes, tying him with Jim Kelly for 17th onthe NFL career list. “It was great to see the back of his jersey, running. Thatwas pretty sweet.”

Favre, who threw three interceptions in a loss to Green Bay last week, hadhis only interception on a short pass that bounced out of Harvin’s gut and intothe arms of Devin McCourty(notes), who ran 37 yards before he was brought down at theVikings’ 37. Four plays later, Green-Ellis ran it in from 13-yards out to giveNew England a 21-10 lead.

New England’s first touchdown came on a direct snap to running back DannyWoodhead(notes), who ran it from 3 yards out to make it 7-7.

Raiders roll again, rip Seahawks 33-3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)—Jason Campbell(notes) and a relentless defense gave theOakland Raiders that elusive back-to-back win in emphatic fashion.

Campbell threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns, and Oakland’s defense didthe rest to help the Raiders even their record at the midpoint of the seasonwith a 33-3 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Darren McFadden(notes) ran for 111 yards as the Raiders (4-4) reached the .500 markthis late in the season for the first time since 2002.

They did it by finally putting together back-to-back wins, a feat that hadeluded them the past two seasons. Oakland had lost its last seven gamesfollowing a win, outscored by an average of 17 points. This time, the Raidersfollowed up their 59-point offensive outburst in Denver a week ago with adefensive masterpiece against the Seahawks (4-3).

Oakland didn’t allow a first down until more than 27 minutes into the gameand gave up just 162 yards of offense, including 47 on the ground. It was thefewest yards allowed by the Raiders since 2006 and the fewest points allowedsince shutting out Kansas City in the final game of the 2002 season.

The Raiders also gained 545 yards, marking the first time in franchisehistory they put together back-to-back 500-yard offensive performances. Oaklandhas outscored the opposition 92-17 the past two weeks.

It wasn’t all good news for the Raiders. Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha(notes)left the game in the fourth quarter with an injured right ankle. He was unableto walk off under his own power and went immediately to the locker room.

The normally reliable Olindo Mare(notes) missed two field goal attempts forSeattle, ending a streak of 30 consecutive makes on a day all the bounces wentOakland’s way. The Raiders turned one double-deflection into a 55-yard pass playand another into an interception.

The first of those breaks came on a third down late in the third quarter.Campbell’s slant pass hit Darrius Heyward-Bey(notes) in the chest, bounced up and wasbobbled by Jacoby Ford(notes) before Michael Bush(notes) picked it out of the air and rumbledfor the big gain. That set up one of Sebastian Janikowski’s(notes) four field goals togive Oakland a 16-0 lead.

On the next possession, Matt Hasselbeck(notes) threw a deep ball to Deon Butler(notes)that cornerback Stanford Routt(notes) deflected. Butler tried to make a diving catch ofthe batted pass, but the ball popped out right to Tyvon Branch(notes) for aninterception.

Campbell connected on a 69-yard touchdown pass to Heyward-Bey on the nextplay to make it 23-0, sending the half-filled Coliseum into delirium.

The only remaining drama was whether the Raiders would finish their firstshutout in eight years. Mare finally made a 47-yard field goal with 9:02remaining to get Seattle on the board.

McFadden had his fourth 100-yard rushing day of the season. Heyward-Bey hada career-high 105 yards receiving and his second career touchdown, and fullbackMarcel Reece(notes) also had a career high with 90 yards receiving, including a 30-yardTD on fourth-and-1 in the second quarter.

Reece went in motion on the play and was one-on-one with safety LawyerMilloy(notes) on the outside. Reece beat Milloy on a slant, and when linebacker DavidHawthorne(notes) was unable to get over in time, Reece easily scored.

The Raiders sacked Hasselbeck on his first two dropbacks, and it was thatkind of half for the Seahawks. They gained just 4 yards in the first quarter anddidn’t record a first down until Hasselbeck connected with John Carlson(notes) on a35-yard pass with 2:29 to go in the first half.

No. 11 Oklahoma faces tough road stretch

NORMAN, Okla. (AP)—For going on six years now, there has been little doubtof Oklahoma’s dominance at home.

Whether the Sooners are in for a great season comes down to how they playaway from Norman, where they’ve won 35 in a row for the longest active streak inthe nation.

Heading into the final stretch of this season, there’s only one game left atOklahoma’s friendly confines—with trips to Texas A&M, No. 22 Baylor and No. 20Oklahoma State ahead. The Bears, Cowboys and Sooners each have one loss inconference play with the head-to-head meetings between all three teams yet tocome.

While OSU and Baylor will play in Stillwater in Saturday, Oklahoma (7-1, 3-1Big 12) will head to Texas A&M (5-3, 2-2) and try to get rid of the mistakesthat popped up in a road loss at Missouri a week ago.

“Going on the road to all these Big 12 South division teams, and North,it’s tough. But you could ask me that the six times a year we’re on the road,”said coach Bob Stoops, who is 71-2 at home and 33-15 on the road.

“It’s that way every time. And probably fair to say when people come here,it’s tough to play, too.”

Oklahoma committed a season-high three turnovers, helping lead to threeempty possessions inside the 15-yard line in the loss to Missouri. But thoseuncharacteristic errors disappeared again when the Sooners got home andthrottled Colorado 43-10 in a turnover-free performance this week.

“We learned from Missouri and what the atmosphere is like playing in a biggame on the road,” said quarterback Landry Jones, who had a career-high 453yards passing and four TDs against the Buffaloes.

“Texas A&M is a big challenge at home. They’re always a great home team, sowe’ve got to go in there and we’ve got to play the best football to expect towin that game.”

The Sooners had committed only five turnovers through their first six gamesbefore Jones threw two interceptions and Mossis Madu lost a fumble in theirfirst game at an opponent’s stadium this season.

“I feel like the tables would have been turned last week if we didn’t havethe turnovers,” receiver Ryan Broyles said. “If we take care of the ball, wecan play with the best of them.”

Surprisingly, the best in the South have been Oklahoma State and Baylor. TheCowboys have excelled while replacing a slew of starters, including quarterbackZac Robinson, in a rebuilding year and the Bears are leading the division afternever having finished higher than fifth since the start of the Big 12.

The Sooners cleared their usual hurdle to the conference title with a 28-20win against rival Texas earlier this season, but the Longhorns have sincetumbled to 4-4.

“It’s never been easy with them or anybody. The rest of the schedule, wealways know how tough the South is,” Stoops said. “You guys take it forgranted in some ways. We don’t. It’s the only way to have a chance to win it, isto know what you’re up against.”

That means not taking anything for granted against Texas A&M, which hasbounced back from a three-game losing streak with back-to-back wins againstKansas and Texas Tech. The Aggies lost starting running back Christine Michaelto a broken right tibia, but got a school-record 449 yards passing from newstarting quarterback Ryan Tannehill in a 45-27 win against Tech.

“It’s always tough to go on the road, especially A&M. That’s a tough placeto play,” said tight end James Hanna, who has caught a TD pass in four straightgames. “You’ve just got to concentrate on little things, details. Not turningthe ball is important. Being physical is important. We’ve got to run the ball.We’ve got to have balance.

“If we can do that, we should be fine.”

Chargers rally past Titans, Young hurt

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Antonio Gates(notes) is playing pretty well for a guy with turftoe. Vince Young(notes) isn’t as lucky.

Taking advantage of yet another mismatch, Gates got behind linebacker WillWitherspoon(notes) to haul in a go-ahead, 48-yard pass from Philip Rivers(notes) midwaythrough the third quarter to help the San Diego Chargers rally for a 33-25 winSunday against the Tennessee Titans, who lost Young to another injury.

Young was hurt while scrambling with less than six minutes to play and hadto be helped off the field. Kerry Collins(notes) moved the Titans to the Chargers 15before Chris Johnson dropped a pass on fourth-and-2 with 30 seconds to go.

Young had played well after returning from a sprained left knee and anklethat kept him out of a win against Philadelphia a week earlier. Young completed10 of 21 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns.

San Diego (3-5) snapped a three-game losing streak and won its eighthstraight game against the Titans dating to 1993. The Titans (5-3) had theirthree-game winning streak snapped. San Diego is the only team Titans coach JeffFisher hasn’t beaten.

The Titans lost wide receiver Kenny Britt(notes) to a hamstring injury in the firstquarter. Chargers rookie running back Ryan Mathews(notes) sustained cuts and scrapeswhen his helmet came off in the third quarter but he returned.

Gates, who’s been playing through a toe injury, caught his ninth TD passthis season for a 24-19 lead. The star tight end was late coming out of thelocker room after halftime because he was getting his foot re-taped.

Rivers had his fifth 300-yard game of the season, completing 27 of 36 for305 yards, with two TDs and one interception. He also threw a 13-yard touchdownpass to Darren Sproles(notes) with 6:51 left. The Chargers botched the point after,which would have given them a nine-point lead.

Young’s 71-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Nate Washington(notes) pulled theTitans to 27-25 with 11:43 left. The conversion pass to Johnson failed.

The win may have saved the season for the Chargers, who’d been off to theirworst start in four seasons under coach Norv Turner.

The Chargers trailed 19-7 late in the second quarter before getting threestraight scores.

Mathews scored on a 7-yard run 1:55 before halftime and Kris Brown(notes) kicked a34-yard field goal midway through the third quarter to bring the Chargers withintwo. Gates’ TD catch gave San Diego its first lead since the first quarter.

Brown kicked a 36-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter for a 27-19lead. On the Titans’ first play from scrimmage, Young hit Washington for thelong touchdown.

The Titans took their 19-7 lead on a 29-yard TD run by Johnson with 4:43left in the second quarter. He started right and then cut back to his left,avoided two tackles and then picked up a key block from Young, who took outcornerback Antoine Cason(notes) at about the 15 to clear the way to the end zone. Youngthen slung Johnson over his shoulder and carried him toward the bench.

Another Chargers special teams blunder led to a 2-0 Titans lead less thantwo minutes into the game. Nick Schommer(notes) blocked Mike Scifres’(notes) punt, with theball bouncing out of the end zone and into the stands for a safety.

Rivers led the Chargers on an 83-yard, 15-play drive capped on a 1-yard runby fullback Mike Tolbert(notes) for a 7-2 lead.

The Titans got Rob Bironas’(notes) 21-yard field goal and a 1-yard TD pass fromYoung to tight end Craig Stevens(notes) on consecutive drives to take a 12-7 lead.

Kidd’s 65-footer lifts Mavs to road win

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Swish. Nothing but net from 65 feet out.

That’s how Jason Kidd(notes) ended the first half against the Los Angeles Clippers,and it was likely the earliest game-turning shot the All-Star point guard evermade against an opponent. Kidd’s miracle shot-put heave from inside the 3-pointarc at the opposite end just beat the buzzer, and the Mavericks went on to beatthe Clippers 99-83 on Sunday.

“I got the rebound, maybe with 2 seconds left, and I was going to eat it.But (Jason Terry(notes)) told me to shoot it,” said Kidd, who finished with 13 points,nine rebounds and seven assists. “I’m not going for the 3-point record,percentage-wise, so I let it go and it was on line. A lot of times when they’reon line, they don’t go in. So I got lucky.

“A lot of times those can be momentum shots for the team that makes it, andit can definitely deflate a team if you’re on the other end of it. We felt wecould build on it, and we went from there.”

The Mavericks, who squandered an 11-point lead in the first half beforetaking a 49-47 halftime lead on Kidd’s miracle shot, pulled ahead 63-52 with a10-1 spurt capped by Tyson Chandler’s(notes) slam dunk off an alley-oop feed from Kiddwith 7:23 left in the third period. Dallas built the margin to 16 on JoseBarea’s 3-pointer with 8 1/2 minutes remaining, and the Clippers got no closer than11 points after that.

“We wanted it. We needed to stay active,” reserve forward Shawn Marion(notes)said. “I think everybody was making extra passes and looking for each other.That’s the mark of a great team. And I think the more we keep helping eachother, the better we are. For us to spread the wealth like this is amazing. It’sa great feeling and a great win because we were coming off a rough loss lastnight and we needed this one.”

Caron Butler(notes) scored 17 points and Dirk Nowitzki(notes) added 16 points and sevenrebounds. Marion got 10 of his 12 points in the fourth quarter for the defendingSouthwest Division champions in their first road game of the season.

“Marion is a really key part of our team,” coach Rick Carlisle said.“He’s embraced his role, which is not easy for a guy that’s a four-timeAll-Star. But he’s just kept his head completely into it, and that’s somethingthat runs off on everybody. Right now, what he’s doing, he’s become a realleader on this team. He keeps guys into it and he’s been ready to come in andmake things happen.”

Rookie Blake Griffin(notes) had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Clippers, whomissed 14 of their first 16 shots and finished at 34 percent while falling to0-3 on the season under new coach Vinny Del Negro. None of the starters reacheddouble digits until Griffin converted a slam dunk with 5:32 left in the thirdquarter.

“We got down offensively and didn’t make shots, which affected ourdefense,” point guard Baron Davis(notes) said. “We just ran into a team that stuck totheir game plan. The team that sticks to their game plan is the team that isgoing to win.”

Griffin missed nine of his first 11 shots and also was hit with his firsttechnical foul in his third NBA game from referee Mark Lindsay after teammateRyan Gomes(notes) was called for his fifth personal with 3:06 to play.

“He didn’t shoot particularly well and missed some easy ones he usuallymakes,” Del Negro said. “But teams are going to scout him and play himdifferent ways, and that is part of the growing he has to go through and thematuration process. If guys are backing off him, he’s got to feel comfortabletaking the outside jump shots—or, depending who’s guarding him, overpowerhim.”

Davis came up empty on his first five attempts before connecting on a20-footer that trimmed Dallas’ lead to eight at 66-58 with 5:58 left in thethird. Rasual Butler(notes), the Clippers’ 3-point specialist, was 0 for 5 from behindthe arc and played 21 scoreless minutes.

“Our tempo has to pick up. I don’t like our tempo right now,” Del Negrosaid. “We have to push the ball a little bit more and get more field goalattempts. We have to get the ball in the attack some more, then get into playsets and set up screens and be more efficient with our timing and execution.”

The Clippers played without backup point guard Randy Foye(notes), who tweaked hishamstring during Saturday’s practice and is expected to miss one or two weeksaccording to Del Negro. The club will have a better idea of Foye’s statusMonday.

NOTES: The Clippers have lost the last seven times they’ve played onHalloween, including a 93-84 defeat to the Mavericks a year ago at StaplesCenter. The last time they won on this date was in 1985 during the only 5-0start in franchise history. … Del Negro is the third Clippers coach to losehis first three games after getting hired in the offseason since the team movedto Los Angeles in 1984. Harvick wins even though he loses (Yahoo! Sports)

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Big One didn’t come, the winner didn’t immediately know who won, and the Chase didn’t break wide open. So anyone who came to Talladega looking for fireworks or finality didn’t get a sniff of either.

But as Kevin Harvick showed Sunday with some bare bond tape and some guts, championships can certainly be won without a lot of exclamation points.

Most race fans and pundits expected a gigantic wreck to alter not only the Halloween race here, but the entire Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. The strategy among Chase leaders Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick was to avoid the carnage and sneak over the finish line without blowing the season.

And while all three had their share of drama – Hamlin lost the draft and went a lap (and nearly 100 points) down, while Johnson was abandoned during his late charge up front when teammate Jeff Gordon’s overheating engine forced the No. 24 car to peel off – Sunday’s big winner, ironically, ended up being the guy who actually did get into a wreck.

That was Harvick. On Lap 141, in a dust-up that would bring only the third caution of the afternoon, eventual winner and Harvick teammate Clint Bowyer spun Marcos Ambrose into Harvick’s front end.

“I looked in the mirror and saw Kevin was tore up and I was sick,” Bowyer said. “You don’t want to be the guy who costs RCR a championship.”

But Harvick somehow steadied his chassis and kept his nose straight if not clean.

“When I saw [Ambrose] start to spin, I didn’t want to spin out,” Harvick said. “I didn’t want to come back up the racetrack. I didn’t want to spin backwards and have a chance of getting in the wall. He rolled across the nose and I was able to not keep hitting him. I was able to go back in gas and push him off me.”

That bit of artistry saved Harvick the race and maybe the season. He would lose the cap off the front of his car and he even had a flat tire as he rolled down pit road, but “as long as we were in middle of pack,” Harvick said, “we were fine.”

His car sure didn’t look fine. His crew slapped the entire front with 200-mph bear bond tape, heavy glue, and some green tape on top of that tape. Suddenly, one of the coolest cars on the planet looked like one of Meat Loaf’s old concert amps.

But Harvick kept on and as the race entered the final 10 laps, there he was being pushed up the inside by David Ragan. Harvick remained near the front and then, with two laps left, David Reutimann ushered him past Johnson and into a four-wide mess at the front.

That would have been a predictable time for the shrapnel to fly and chaos to reign, and it did, sort of. It wasn’t a Big One – a multi-car crash that takes out half the field. No, it was AJ Allmendinger and only AJ Allmendinger flipping toward the back of the pack.

Allmendinger’s wreck, which came right after the white flag, brought out a caution. With that, the race was over. But who was ahead?

At the time, Bowyer and Harvick were nose-and-nose at the front of the pack. Harvick declared himself the victor. Still, there was no word from NASCAR. As the two waited on the track, Bowyer decided to do a burnout. Then, the two drove up to each other, driver’s side door to driver’s side door and shook hands.

Finally word came down. Bowyer was the winner.

As far as the Chase goes, so was Harvick.

“We beat the guys we needed to beat,” said Harvick, who trimmed 24 points off his deficit to Johnson (who came in seventh) and now trails by just 38. Hamlin finished ninth and is 14 points back.

Now it’s on to Texas and Phoenix before the finale at Homestead, Fla.

“I feel good about the last three tracks,” Harvick said. “For me, it’s all about not making a mistake. You’re going to have to run in the top five and have a chance to win. Forcing it usually leads to mistakes.”

That plan has worked fine for No. 29. He has 23 top-10 finishes in 33 starts this season, and although the near-misses have irked him a bit – “about six inches and we would have won every speedway race there was this year” – he knows there’s a bigger fish waiting in Florida next month.

“No offense to [Johnson], but somebody else needs to win,” he said after the race, with the four-time champ sitting next to him. “I like Jimmie as good as anybody, but for the sake of the sport, one of the two of us [himself or Hamlin] needs to make something happen.”

Harvick made something happen Sunday at Talladega. And he might make something bigger happen in the final three races – even if nothing exciting happens at all.

No. 1 Oregon inspiring awe in opponents

LOS ANGELES (AP)—To USC cornerback Shareece Wright, the most stunningaspect of No. 1 Oregon’s offense isn’t its speed or its sophistication, or eventhe Ducks’ standout skill players.

No, Wright and the Trojans were bowled over by Oregon’s elegant simplicity.

“They didn’t even run a lot of plays,” Wright said after the Ducks’ 53-32win at the Coliseum. “They just run them to perfection and wait until thedefense breaks down.”

Oregon (8-0, 5-0 Pac-10) makes it look easy to be this good.

With a dominant win over the Pac-10’s longtime power, the Ducks maintainedtheir unbeaten season and tightened their hold on the top spot in the AP pollfor the third straight week, moving within four games of a perfect season and alikely spot in the national title game.

Two-thirds through what’s shaping up as an historic offensive season, justhow good are the Ducks? USC coach Lane Kiffin actually thought his defenseplayed fairly well while surrendering 599 yards and the most points Oregon hadever scored in 57 games against USC (5-3, 2-3).

Kiffin also had words of warning for Washington, California, Arizona andOregon State—the only stops remaining on the Ducks’ demolition tour of thePac-10.

“I don’t care if you try to slow the game down or speed the game up, butyou better score touchdowns against them,” Kiffin said. “It doesn’t do you anygood to slow down the clock.”

Oregon is inspiring awe in every opponent it faces and every first-timeobserver on television around the country, and not because coach Chip Kelly hasconcocted any complicated plays that confuse opponents.

For much of the second half, the Ducks’ offense largely consisted ofrepeated quick snaps followed by handoffs to LaMichael James, who almost alwaysran between the tackles on the way to 239 yards rushing, the second-most everallowed to one player by a USC defense.

Quarterback Darron Thomas gave another efficient performance, passing for288 yards and four touchdowns—matching the most ever thrown against USC.

“I was thinking I would feel like we couldn’t even breathe or line up withtheir tempo, but we lined up well,” Kiffin said. “But those are two greatplayers. Their quarterback and their tailback has career days today.”

Actually, James and Thomas were close to business as usual for the Ducks.

Oregon’s defense was barely adequate against USC by most football standards,surrendering 32 points, 377 yards and 27 first downs. Yet normal standardssimply don’t apply to the Ducks, whose offense’s speed and effectiveness all butguarantees a half-dozen touchdowns in each game.

The defense again got plenty of work because Oregon’s offense made threetouchdown drives that lasted less than a minute.

“Our guys are playing hard, but they don’t show the signs of being tired,”Kelly said. “I know they’re not out there whistling. They’re working theirtails off, and I just think they’ve got a mindset that the guy they’re playingagainst is a little more tired than they are.”

Oregon has scored at least 42 points in every game this season, and USC’s 32points were the most the Ducks have allowed.

Just four games remain in the Ducks’ quest for the ultimate prize, and thedoubters are shrinking with each weekly performance.

“We know that every week is going to be our biggest week from here onout,” said receiver Jeff Maehl, who caught three touchdown passes at USC. “Ifwe come out and lose a game, our shot at the national championship is totallyout the door. We keep that in mind, and we know we’ve got to match the otherteam’s intensity.”

Face laceration knocks Favre out of game

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)—Brett Favre(notes) was carted off the field midway in thefourth quarter Sunday with a face laceration.

Favre was hit by Patriots defensive tackle Myron Pryor(notes) while throwing. Hestayed on the ground momentarily, then tried to get up while holding his face.But Favre then sank to the ground as Vikings trainers rushed onto the field, andthey helped him to the sideline.

The 41-year-old quarterback spent a few minutes on a training table at theVikings’ sideline as staffers held a towel to his chin. He sat up after trainersapplied a compress, then was carted from the field as a few fans booed.

Favre, who did not appear bothered by two fractures in his left foot thatinitially jeopardized his availability Sunday, extended his NFL recordconsecutive starts streak to 292.

Tarvaris Jackson(notes) replaced Favre and immediately threw a 1-yard touchdownpass to Naufahu Tahi(notes). Jackson completed a 2-point conversion pass to PercyHarvin(notes), bringing Minnesota within 21-18.

Favre has both a stress fracture and an avulsion fracture in the foot. Theavulsion fracture in the heel bone is where a fragment has been torn away by atendon or ligament.

Favre appeared to have no trouble with his foot, though. He injured hisankle and heel in last week’s loss at Green Bay. But after a week of treatmentand even some practice time Friday, he was in the starting lineup Sunday, a fewdays after coach Brad Childress said he would consider starting Jackson if Favrewas hobbled.

Favre was fine for most of the game, but left with 7:31 remaining after thehard hit by Pryor left him wobbly.

McNabb benched late in Redskins’ loss

DETROIT (AP)—It’s about time the Detroit Lions start to see a return fromtheir top draft picks.

After so many years of first-round busts, Matthew Stafford(notes), Calvin Johnson(notes)and latest top pick Ndamukong Suh(notes) have the Lions believing they are on the roadto respectability.

Stafford threw four touchdown passes, including a go-ahead 10-yarder toJohnson with 3:12 left, and Suh helped the Lions score nine more points in a14-second span for a 37-25 win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

“You expect to hit on those players,” Lions coach Jim Schwartz said. “Wehave some guys that are big-time players.”

The Redskins big-name player Donovan McNabb(notes), meanwhile, was benched for thefinal two possessions. Coach Mike Shanahan said Rex Grossman(notes) was morecomfortable with the team’s 2-minute offense.

“I thought that was the best scenario for us to win,” Shanahan insisted.

The move backfired.

Grossman fumbled on his first play, Suh scooped up the football and returnedit 17 yards for a touchdown. The No. 2 pick in this year’s draft also had twosacks in a three-play span.

“He’s one of the best in the game,” teammate Kyle Vanden Bosch(notes) said.

Stafford and Johnson are pretty good, too.

The Lions have invested as much as $142 million in Stafford—the No. 1overall pick last year—and Johnson—the No. 2 pick two years ago—to leadthe franchise’s turnaround.

“There’s a lot of bank involved in that connection,” Schwartz said.

It paid off against the Redskins, helping Detroit (2-5) match the number ofwins it had the previous two years.

Stafford, playing for the first time since Week 1 when his right shoulderwas separated, was 26 of 45 for 212 yards with an interception to go with hisfour TDs.

Johnson had nine catches for 101 yards and a career-high three scores.

“He’s incredible,” Stafford said.

McNabb, a six-time Pro Bowl quarterback, meanwhile, has his lowest ratingsince 1999 when Philadelphia drafted him No. 2 overall and he started six games.

The Redskins (4-4) made a bold move in April, giving up draft picks toacquire him from the Eagles, and the results have been mixed at best.

Washington had 25-20 lead with 4:40 left when Alphonso Smith(notes) stepped infront of McNabb’s pass at the Redskins 41 to set up the go-ahead TD.

McNabb, who was 17 of 30 for 210 yards with a TD and an interception,refused to criticize Shanahan’s decision.

“You have to be a professional,” he said. “There’s a long season ahead ofus.”

McNabb watched the end of the game from the sideline with a baseball cap,getting benched for just the second time in his career. The other time was twoyears ago against Baltimore, when he was playing for Philadelphia.

“You just have to learn from it and move on,” McNabb said. “I did itthen, and I’ll do it now.”

Shanahan said McNabb is still the team’s starting quarterback. If that isstill true in two weeks after a bye, McNabb will get another chance against hisformer team when the Redskins host the Eagles in a Monday night game.

McNabb started the game without running back Clinton Portis(notes), then lost RyanTorain(notes) in the first half with a hamstring injury.

Rookie Keiland Williams(notes) scored a go-ahead TD early in the fourth quarter andBrandon Banks(notes) returned a kickoff 96 yards to put the Redskins ahead again midwaythrough the quarter, but not even the NFL’s hottest cornerback could stopStafford and Johnson.

DeAngelo Hall(notes) did get the best of the matchup early in the game—leaping infront of Johnson for an interception in the end zone—but Johnson ended upbeing very productive.

The Lions had a balanced offense with Kevin Smith(notes) and Jahvid Best(notes) combiningfor 99 yards rushing and Suh-led defense that made McNabb uncomfortable from astumbling start to a benching finish.

After a sluggish and scoreless first quarter, long returns set up the firsttouchdown for both teams.

Detroit’s Stefan Logan(notes) brought a punt back 71 yards and Johnson caught apass and dragged Hall about 5 yards for a TD.

Banks returned the ensuing kick to the Lions 46 and McNabb took advantagewith a 36-yard run and a 6-yard pass to Torain to make it 7-all.

Banks returned another kickoff for a score that was negated by a penalty.That was one of many mistakes—including jumping offsides on an attempted fieldgoal that allowed Detroit to score a TD—that ended up haunting the Redskins.

“We still have a good football team,” linebacker London Fletcher(notes) said.“We’re not in a panic-type mode.”
