Golf-Perry’s lead at River Highlands cut to one shot by Toms (Reuters)

NEW YORK, June 27 (Reuters) – American Kenny Perry had hisovernight lead trimmed to one stroke when the weather-hit secondround of the Travelers Championship was completed on Saturday inCromwell, Connecticut.

Compatriot David Toms, three shots off the pace when playwas suspended the previous day because of thunderstorms, birdiedtwo of his last five holes for a flawless five-under-par 65.

In pursuit of his first PGA Tour title since the 2006 SonyOpen in Hawaii, Toms struck a superb approach to three feet onhis final hole, the par-four ninth, and knocked in the birdieputt.

That left him at 10-under 130, one behind Perry who hadcarded a 68 at the rain-softened TPC River Highlands on Fridaybefore the storms rolled into the area.

“I made a nice putt there on my first hole on number fivefor birdie, and then finished up with a birdie on nine,” asmiling Toms told reporters. “I played well this morning.

“It’s just a good start really, that’s all it is,” added theAmerican, who has posted six top-10s in 15 PGA Tour starts thisseason without returning to the winner’s circle.

“I need to keep it up. Obviously the scoring is good and Ilook forward to the challenge.”

Paul Goydos (68) and Ryan Moore (65) were tied for third atnine under, one ahead of fellow Americans Anthony Kim (66), BenCurtis (64), John Merrick (67), Colt Knost (66), CaseyWittenberg (65) and PGA Tour rookie Aaron Watkins (67).

U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover (71), three-times majorwinner Vijay Singh of Fiji (70) and Spanish world number fourSergio Garcia (69) made the cut with a stroke to spare at fourunder.

The cut fell at three-under 137 with 80 players advancing.Britain’s Justin Rose, Swede Daniel Chopra and defendingchampion Stewart Cink of the U.S. were among those missing out.
