Clausen suffers black eye after punch

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP)—Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen is nursing ablack eye after getting punched outside a South Bend bar early Sunday morning.
According to a university source, who spoke on condition of anonymitybecause he was not authorized to speak about the matter, Clausen was at C.J.’sPub about 2 a.m. with his family and girlfriend in the wake of Notre Dame’sdouble overtime loss to Connecticut.
The group decided to leave after words were exchanged with others at thebar. As they were leaving, Clausen’s girlfriend realized she left her pursebehind. The source says Clausen went back to retrieve the purse and someonefollowed him outside and punched him. The source says the quarterback did notfight back and left.
South Bend Police Capt. Phil Trent says police were called to the sceneafter receiving a report of a fight. He says police arrived within minutes andeveryone was gone.
Coach Charlie Weis declined to talk about the dustup at his news conferenceTuesday other than to say Clausen would practice with the team on Tuesday andwould start Saturday against Stanford.
