Memphis conceals NCAA response to appeal
November 18, 2009
The University of Memphis is refusing to release the NCAA’s response to itsappeal of a ruling that vacated the 2007-08 men’s basketball season.
The university on Wednesday denied a request filed by the The AssociatedPress under Tennessee’s Open Records Act.
Memphis’s legal counsel says they can’t produce the document because theydidn’t receive a copy, and instead read a version of it through the NCAA’s Website.
The university says NCAA rules prohibit the university from printing thedocument for the media off the association’s Web site.
In a similar public records case, a Florida court ruled last month the NCAAmust release documents on Florida State University’s appeal of an academiccheating penalty. The NCAA tried to keep them secret on a read-only, secure Website.
