Spartans G Lucas in boot with leg injury

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP)—Two-time All-Big Ten player Kalin Lucas is out of MichiganState’s second-round NCAA tournament game against Maryland with a leg injurythat has him in a walking boot.

The Spartans’ floor leader began hopping on one leg and keeping his leftfoot off the ground after making a runner and landing awkwardly on his left legnear the baseline with 2:28 remaining in the first half. As play continued atthe other end, Lucas hopped down court on his right leg while wincing in pain.He tried to defend the ball before officials gave him an injury timeout.

The junior then hopped to his bench. After a trainer looked at his lowerleft leg for a moment, Lucas hobbled into a tunnel that leads to the lockerroom.

Michigan State led by nine points when Lucas left. He was remained out atthe start of the second half, and wasn’t even on the bench until 12 1/2 minutesremained in the game. The Spartans’ lead had grown to 15 by then, thanks to theshooting of Durrell Summers.

On the bench, Lucas looked done for the day, if not longer. He was wearing ahooded sweatshirt and sweat pants, plus the walking boot on his left foot andankle.

Three-point specialist Chris Allen did not start for the Spartans because ofa foot injury. He entered midway through the first half, moved stiffly for acouple of minutes, then left the game and remained on the bench into the secondhalf.
